About the Experience
The Raikas, which is also known as Rabaris, are the largest pastoralists or specialized camel breeding tribe existing in western Rajasthan. Raika’s take pride in the fact that for them camel breeding is not just business but their heritage.
Mana Hotels has identified a Raika household not too far from the hotel where the guests can observe their way of life. It is located 8 km from Mana and takes about 20 minutes by a small car/jeep.
Leave Mana Hotels after breakfast by car/jeep. Large vehicles such as Tempo Travellers or Bus cannot reach the venue as the roads are narrow
After 20 minutes, reach the house of the Raika family comprising of 2 couples and 1 child
Enjoy a tea prepared on their traditional chullah and see how they prepare their lunch in an unconventional manner
Observe the men relax while inhaling tobacco through a ‘Chillam’
Pay homage to their deity called ‘Mamaji’
Take a walk into the jungle where their camels have gone for grazing
Drive back to Mana Hotels in time for lunch
Although their way of life of still very basic, signs of modern day life are creeping in. This is probably an inevitable adjustment that they are having to make in order to survive.
