Camel Safari in Rajasthan’s Thar Desert!

Rajasthan is one of the biggest tourist hotspots in India. Having so much to offer in terms of history, culture and landscape, this land of kings is in great demand amongst tourists from all corners of the globe. While Rajasthan’s beautiful and rich cities have their attractions, the Thar Desert is enticing on its own. And there is no better way of exploring the desert than on a camel.

Camels are found in Rajasthan in plenty and are known as the Ships of the Thar Desert. They might be smelly, surly and mostly unattractive but they tend to grow on you. While riding a camel might not be the easiest, a camel safari is the best way to explore the interiors of Thar, which is in essence, the epitome of exotic India.

In course of a camel safari, you are more likely to view the indigenous culture of Rajasthan which may often go unnoticed. The safari itineraries are usually planned around Bikaner, Khimsar, Osian and Jaisalmer, all of which are exquisite and beautiful destinations. Some safaris can be only for a day while others can last up to seven days. The night halts in course of the Safari can be at one of the quaint villages that dot the Thar or in tents which create the perfect Arabian Nights ambiance. Halts at the villages often allow tourists to garner a better insight into the traditional way of life and culture of the villages. Most safaris also include cultural programmes by local artisans for the travellers at the close of the day.

The ideal time to experience the perfect desert safari is during the winter months, namely between November to March. When on a camel safari, it is recommended that you keep yourself sufficiently hydrated and well protected against the sun with hats, sun block and scarves. The ideal group size for a safari is 4 to 10 people.
