Gateway of Rajasthan
Bharatpur, also known as the ‘Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan’, was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD and was formed out of the region formerly known as Mewat. Capital of the Jat kingdom of Rajasthan, the city was very well fortified and long considered invincible. Together with Deeg and Dholpur, Bharatpur forms an integral part of the history of Rajasthan.

Nowadays, Bharatpur is known more for the world famous Keoladeo Ghana National park which hosts around 250 species of migratory birds during the winter and monsoons. This national park was originally developed as a prime duck shooting spot during colonial times, until 1956, when it was declared a sanctuary for birds. Listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO, today, Keoladeo Ghana National Park attracts tourists from all over the world.

When to visit

Ideal time to visit Bharatpur is during the monsoon and winters. During monsoons, thousands of migratory birds make the park their home. During monsoons, one can spot the white fowls and Siberian cranes in large numbers along with many other species of migratory birds.

How to reach

One can reach Bharatpur easily via train from Kota, Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, Mumbai and other cities. Within the city, one can take auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws or tongas.

Apart from Keoladeo, one can also visit the Lohagarh fort. True to its name, this fort repelled many a British attackers. One can also visit the Bharatpur Palace, a rich blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture. The Government Museum is also a must-see for any tourist. The ‘Karma Khas’ building inside the museum displays a fine collection of antiques, ancient inscriptions and delicate sculptures.
