Review: Shiv Niwas Palace, Udaipur

One of the finest properties in Udaipur, the Shiv Niwas Palace is a crescent shaped palace which was built in the early 20^th century during the reign of Maharana Fateh Singh. It was meant exclusively for visiting dignitaries and guests of the House of Mewar and today, it is a Grand Heritage Palace run by the HRH group of hotels that offers similar hospitality to tourists. It continues to combine the elegance of the last century with modern amenities.

Shiv Niwas Palace has a total of 36 rooms of which, there are 17 suites. Each spacious suite is styled and decorated differently with original furniture and portraits that have been in the royal family for generations. The three imperial suites in the hotel can literally knock your socks off. All suites in the hotel overlook the natural panorama of Udaipur, a sight that is bound to make you marvel.

Pantya at Shiv Niwas palace is a multi-cuisine restaurant adorned with original paintings from the Mewari School of Art, gold latticework and gorgeous, antic chandeliers. Its name comes from a Mewari word meaning ‘sitting in line, in protocol’. The Pantya offers Continental, Mughali and authentic Rajasthani delicacies. Owing to the uneven topography of palace, the restaurant is elevated allowing an awe-inspiring view of the city.

The Pool Deck on the other hand, provides a soothing, romantic ambiance ideal for a date with subdued lighting and soft instrumental music. The Panera (bar) is the by the Pool Deck and is exquisite with authentic decor of glass inlay work, huge chandeliers and ornate mirrors. Its name is derived from the Hindi word for water or paani and refers to the storehouse for water and liquor for the royal household.

The Palki Khana or the Pavilion for Palanquins is a European style cafe that offers a relaxed and informal ambiance for lunch and dinner. It is ideal for a hectic day of sightseeing and the coffee bar and heritage liqueurs available on their menu are worth a mention.
